Taste of Perth

Taste of Perth

Taste of Perth, at Langley Park is one of the most enticing food events on the Perth calendar, this year being no different. Each of the hottest restaurants in Perth, bring a few signature dishes, so that one can 'taste' and create their own outstanding menu.

We tried first in show, the Manuka Honey Chicken (gf) from Manuka Woodfire Kitchen. They used a portable woodfire oven to create this sticky, succulent wood roasted chicken, that was combined with red cabbage pickle and enhanced by the subtle flavour of the miso sauce. No wonder it was voted number one!

Then we scooted over to Nobu and consumed the delectable Crispy Soft Shell Crab, with watermelon and amazu ponzu. The sweetness of the dish was offset by the tangy, sour notes in a perfect melody.

Next we tried the winner of 2nd in show, the unmissable, Chocolate Fondant, composed of ganache, cookies and cream and caramel sauce, from The Shorehouse. It reminded me of a decadent brownie combined with salted caramel fudge.

We stopped by Lucky Chan's Laundry and Noodle Bar and checked out their winning display and picked up a Piggyback Bao - pulled pork shoulder, Szechaun plum sauce and asian slaw. Then it was off to try our hands at a cooking class at the Lurpak Cooking School. Here we both created compound butter, mine with sweet notes of dark chocolate, pecans, poached pears and ricotta. Lurpak is the Danish butter of choice in our household, so we always stop by the cooking school. Packs of butter are included in the class price which makes it excellent value.

Then off to get a drink after all that hard cooking and scoffing of butter and bread to Aperol Spritz. The iconic orange shining out like a beacon. Also on showcase was Suntory Whisky Kakubin, which is Japan's number one whisky and was served in highball glasses.

As the afternoon wore on, we watched a few cooking demonstrations, including the fabulous demonstration of how to prepare marron in the Electrolux Taste Theatre. Also on offer were, Electrolux Chefs' Secrets masterclasses with chefs in close quarters.

Bring on Taste of Perth 2017!
