We believe that every suburb should have a good chippy (fish and chip shop) and now with the newly opened Grand Lane Fish House, the city of Perth has just that! We have visited Grand Lane Fish House several times and the fish and chips are of excellent quality and are very reasonable. Hence, there is no reason to wait for fish on Fridays as with these prices you can have fish every day of the week!
There is a wonderful bit of history attached to the place, as it stands on the very spot where Anthony and Christafina Antonas ran a successful seafood business called Ritz Café from 1925- 1975. Indeed, while digging up the back floor to construct the new premises, huge oyster shells and glass bottles with stoppers were found. Back in the day, the Ritz Café was popular with theatre goers, today everyone is welcome here.
There are a few different fish available including – Hake, Atlantic Cod, Darwin Threadfin and Barramundi. We love the Atlantic Cod ($11) with chips ($4) which is a huge fresh fillet in a light and crispy batter, served with chips that are made from scratch, double fried with the skin on, using fresh local potatoes. If you need a quick, delicious snack you can grab a large serve of Niamh’s Special Chips – a cone of chips with grated cheese and McDonnell’s curry sauce for just $6.50. You can also purchase homemade dipping sauces including tartare, mayonnaise, curry, satay, sriracha chilli garlic mayonnaise, gravy and joppie sauce. We enjoyed the giant, battered Irish pork sausage that in spite of being deep-fried was very tasty and not at all greasy ($8.50). Fish bites and chips are available at just $7 for the little nibblers. All fish and chips are lovely and light as they are cooked to order in a blend of cottonseed and sunflower oil and to add a really lovely tang there is Sarson’s Malt Vinegar.
There are lovely sides on the menu such as mushy peas ($4) picked onions or gherkins ($1) or coleslaw ($4). Our favourite is the mushy peas, they are so good, we often eat it straight out of the tub. It is made exactly the way we like it pure peas with just a bit of butter for flavour.
Located in Grand Lane next to Toastface Grillah with its modern street art, you have the choice indoor or alfresco seating. If you are in a rush, takeaway is always an option. Service is first rate, Paul, the owner is engaging and upbeat and always greets every customer with a smile. It is no wonder that this chip already has a loyal following. We certainly are huge fans and feel that in keeping with tradition, Grand Lane Fish House is still putting on the Ritz today!
