After our very first visit to Nasi Lemak Korner in Como, we were instantly won over by the authentic Malaysian cuisine, the brilliant staff and the modern venue. The food is outstanding, made using fresh ingredients and time honoured traditional recipes. The philosophy is sound – the intention is to deliver the flavours and textures of street food in Malaysia in modern, chic surrounds.
We had omitted to make a booking, yet we were warmly welcomed and soon ushered to the first available table. This kind of hospitality distinguishes a restaurant and the staff should be commended on their welcoming and friendly approach towards their customers. In today’s busy world, it is refreshing to find this sort of genuine warmth.
After perusing the menu and seeing the delicious meals being brought out to other diners, it was hard to confine our selection to just a few items. Everything looked and smelt amazing. We wanted to order one of everything! We started off with tasty, crispy spring rolls, which were filled with beansprouts, shredded carrot and other seasonal vegetables and were served with a housemade chilli sauce ($4). The beef satay sticks, were tender morsels served with a peanut sauce with just the right amount of spice ($10). For our main course we ordered the roti canai with beef rending. The side of Nasi pandan rice we ordered was sweet and colourful. The roti were amazing and served straight out of the pan. The dahl and sambal were tasty accompaniments to the roti. The beef rending is out of this world! The mélange of spices and the slow cooked beef are a winning combination. We loved it so much, we ordered the beef rendang as a main on our next visit. The pipi clams were a stand out dish ($10). The fresh clams were stir-fried, with chillies, lemongrass and garlic and served in a mouth-watering broth with a slice of buttery, crusty bread. The broth was so good, we were tempted to drink it straight from the bowl, but etiquette prevailed and we restrained ourselves!
What meal is complete without dessert? We ordered the roti tisu ($10) to share and were so glad we did. There were two giant, thin as tissue, crispy roti, sweetened with caramelised sugar, condensed milk and dusted with peanuts. Light, crisp and sugary, who could ask for a better sweet fix?
There are hot and cold beverages on offer, including the popular teh tarik. The mocktails are colourful and we can recommend the lychee ice, blended with jelly and soda ($9). It is a lovely venue and very popular, so make sure you book ahead to avoid disappointment. We were enchanted by the lovely murals, both outside and inside the premises. So why travel overseas, when you can taste Malaysia right here at Nasi Lemak Korner!
