Situated in the peaceful, gum tree flanked suburb of Leeming, Ruby’s Bakehouse offers a trip back to the good ol’ days of charming baked goods, made with real butter, real milk and real eggs, freshly baked from scratch every day.
A favourite with the local crowd is the Mars bar slice with rice crispies and caramel and the Tan fingers. We tried the apple and blueberry strudel that crumbles delectably apart with large apple pieces and a crumbly base ($5). We also enjoyed the choc peppermint slice with marbled swirls of peppermint goodness on a layer of white chocolate icing, the base is composed of a chocolate layer filled with shortbread biscuit pieces ($4). The carrot cake was sweetly presented in individual serving sizes ($6). Our favourite was the lemon and passionfruit slice with crunchy passionfruit seeds and a lovely lemon tang to it ($4).
We ate our way through the waffle stack, piled high in a mountainous Alp like stack with generous scoops of icecream, syrup, chocolate sauce and whipped cream, the stuff dreams are made of ($9.90). Next was a succulent Pulled Pork Panini with cheddar cheese and fresh spinach, which was filling and truly tasty ($9.90). You can also get freshly baked pies with flaky pastry, straight out of the oven and a huge selection of toasted sandwiches, salads, gourmet burgers and other selections.
There are many artisanal wares on offer from candles, French soaps and other gifts. A stand out being the jars layered with all the ingredients one would need, to make your own baked goods at home. These jars make excellent gifts as they include a recipe on the side. The candles are Ruby’s very own natural soy candles with scents such as meringue, coconut lime, French pear, sugar cookie and more. There are also hampers with brimming over with goods including themed garden or baking hampers as well as recipe cards and files.
Nearby, you’ll find a large enclosed playground where you can enjoy your baked goods, while your children happily play. We tried the peppermint tea that was made with real tea leaves and served in an engine red teapot with pretty, decorative cups. The atmosphere is very warm and inviting and is a great place to while away the time.
