Satchmo Café, is as delightful and charming as its owners. It derives its name from the greatest jazz musician of all time – Louis Armstrong, affectionately nicknamed Satchmo. At one stage, Satchmo sought refuge with a Jewish family and the cafés owner, Nathan Karnovsky is a distant relative of that family. In tribute to the kindness that Satchmo received he wore a star of David till the day he died. Satchmo’s name was coined from satchel and mouth (alluding to his large mouth). The café glows with warmth and bonhomie and you feel instantly at ease with yourself and with the world in general. After every visit, the pause and reset button has been hit and you are ready to face the challenges of life with a sense of inner calm.
Here you will find, Jewish soul food that is so delicious, that you will want to dine here every day. The French Challah Toast – is exquisite and puts all other French toasts in the shade. The challah bread is soft, pillowy and is served with caramelised fruit, roast almonds, berry mascarpone and maple syrup. The mascarpone was piped into stunning rosettes and delicately flavoured with real fruit. To add a savoury element, we ordered a slab of mouthwatering bacon on the side. We found the brisket burger to be a delicious and filling choice. It consisted of slow cooked brisket, served piping hot, in a challah bread bun, with sauerkraut, pickle, grilled corn on the cob and a scrumptious potato salad. We can also recommend the house made fish cakes which were accompanied by an egg, herbs and a fresh garden salad and livened up by a garlic aioli dressing. Who can say no to a nourishing bowl of Chicken Matzo Ball soup or a generously filled house made bagel? Satchmo is a licensed café which is a welcome surprise in Perth. Why not put a bit of sparkle in your day by adding a French Martini or a Bloody Mary to your brunch order? You really can have it all at Satchmo!
The baked goods are too enticing to resist. Here you will find the legendary Black and White cookies and Drake’s coffee cake made famous in Seinfeld. We have also enjoyed, the decadent chocolate, peanut butter brownie and peanut butter cookies. The lemon cheesecake is a stand out as it is light and luscious. Everything is made in house and the quality is assured thanks to only the freshest of ingredients being used.
The décor is lovely with a touch of whimsy, vintage lamps add a golden glow and trailing greenery bring fresh energy to the place. Framed posters of Satchmo and other music greats add to the allure. The vintage vinyls are constantly playing, adding to the ambience. Satchmo supports local jazz bands from Fridays to Sundays. Service is always on point and we always get a solid greeting from Nathan. In fact you will feel so comfortable and at home that you will never want to leave!
