Who doesn’t love a big ol’ bowl of happiness- we certainly do! At West End Deli Cereal and Sandwich Bar, we found just that! Shelves are lined with tempting boxes of- Reece’s Puffs, Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Apple Jacks, Corn Chex, Cinnabon and the usual suspects- Weetbix, Froot Loops, Crunchy Nut, Coco Pops, All Bran and Kellogg’s Cornflakes, to name a few. Who says you can only have cereal at breakfast? You can go crazy and make up a bowl of four different types of cereal, creating a stunning kaleidoscope of colour at the low, low price of $4.50. At West End Deli Cereal and Sandwich Bar it is back to basics, choose your cereal, choose your milk and choose your toppings and hey presto! It’s like a whimsical trip down memory lane. It seems like the Sesame Street jingle ‘Sunny Days’ should be playing in the background, as you feel all your cares in the world wash away once you step into this cosy den. As the cooler days are now upon us, you can tuck into a hearty, warming bowl of Apple pie, cinnamon infused steel cut oats, livened up with stewed apples raisins and honey, served with almond milk. Even the milks come in a colourful assortment of flavours like chocolate, strawberry, banana or plain. They even stock soy, rice and almond milk for those who require it. The chocolate, strawberry and banana milk are made in house which accounts for the authentic flavour.
We enjoyed a bowl of Fluffy Bunnies (no bunnies were harmed in the making of this) that consisted of Lucky Charms, malted milk crumble, toasted marshmallows, milo and white chocolate, which we paired with strawberry milk on this occasion. The toasted marshmallows tasted like S’mores and with the lucky charms are a breakfast dreams are made of ($8). On another occasion, we tried the Peanut Butter Jelly Time and we can recommend it for all you peanut butter lovers out there! There were Reece’s Puffs in the bowl, cameralised white chocolate, roasted peanuts, strawberry jam and fudge sauce ($9) sweetened by the addition of delicious chocolate milk. We relished the savoury option of Mushroom Toastie – a confit of mixed wild mushrooms, blue cheese butter, chives and cream cheese on toasted sourdough. The mélange of flavours was exceptional and such a bargain at $10 which included a coffee. It was aesthetically pleasing and beautifully plated, in fact we heard the people at the neighbouring table (who were suffering from food envy) remark, ‘‘We want what they’re having!’’
Lunch is also available from 11.30pm onwards but cereal is served all day. There are many delicious options to choose from including baguettes, pies and salads. We can recommend the pastrami baguette with cucumber pickle, 1000 island dressing, swiss cheese and crisps ($13). On another occasion we enjoyed a baguette filled with succulent pork belly, with apple and cabbage slaw, large crispy onion rings and the oh-so delicious Mrs. Balls’ chutney. There are some healthy looking, fresh juices on offer – Watermelon Passion, Pure Orange, Broccoli Maximise, Mango Tropo and more. The macchiato we had to accompany our meal was smooth and full bodied, with some cute latte art, so kudos to the great barista.
West End Deli Cereal and Sandwich Bar, is housed in the basement of the beautiful, heritage State Buildings. The exposed bricks, the mellow lighting and the pop art posters, all make for a great ambience. Seating is available inside and there are a few tables in the alfresco area. We chose the outdoor area, which is a quiet sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city. Service is a resounding ten out of ten. The staff go out of their way to please and are always most welcoming. Looking forward to our next visit to West End Deli Cereal and Sandwich Bar to try their pies and salads!
